Horsing Around At Halloween – costume ideas for horses

Well it’s that time of year again when we can start horsing around at halloween and dressing up everything and everyone around us. So to really get you in the mood I did a round up of some of my favourite horsey halloween pictures, I hope you enjoy some of these strange and wonderful (albeit slightly weird) ideas.

Horse Costumes

Horses are quite well know for their spooky nature and fleeing at scary objects (such as plastic bags) so imagine the time and patience that was needed to put together some of these designs and then convince the horse it was OK to wear it.

Black horses definitely come into their own at halloween, so much easier to paint on spooky skeletons.

For those of you that fancy something a little less scary how about some of these ideas, ranging from law and order to no order whatsoever in the hippy era.

However one of my favourites has to be the Harry Potter theme, horses at Hogworts that would be magical sight.

Horsey Pumpkin’s

Of course it wouldn’t be halloween without the old pumpkins or Jack ‘O’ Lanterns and the art work has really taken off over the last few years. Here’s a couple of horse designs that really stood out for me.

Of course real fruit doesn’t last long so how about a more permanent pumpkin

The creative use of horse shoes has been a feature of this blog site before, in Horse Shoe Art. And talking of horse shoes, you can also paint them even if they are still on the horse.

I hope you enjoyed this collection of halloween images and if you have any of your own to add just include them in the comments below that would be great. There is also an art stall  on the Equine Market page with more great ideas for art and equine gifts, which is  courtesy of our link with Society 6, an online gallery and curator website.

Wow, there are really some creative horse costume ideas here! I love the Lord of the Rings-inspired one. Just as spooky as in the movie!

That skeleton is so incredibly detailed too. I wonder how long that took to do! What sort of paint would be used to paint on a horse?

I agree there are some nice ideas, you can use any paint that’s safe and non-toxic. If you’re really interested Wikihow has a tutorial at http://www.wikihow.com/Paint-on-a-Horse (believe it or not)

Very nice website! The images really help it come alive. I love all the different costumes you can do with horses, very clever idea. My favorite would have to be the sherif horse. Cute! The website looks very professional. It is a little hard to navigate though. I clicked off to view some other things and couldn’t find my way back to the Halloween article.

Hi thanks for your comments, the ideas certainly are clever although goodness knows how long some of them took to make, and well done the horses for having that much patience. I’m not sure mine would stand still or be so co-operative.

For the navigation all the posts are on the main blog roll which you can access by clicking the title at the top (Equine blog Ireland). Otherwise the categories label for this post is horse humour, hope that helps

I am surprised at how many options there are for decorating your horse during Halloween! These are great ideas and I would love to see more! Great article. Are these horses in patents or anything, do they have costumes for that kind of stuff? I think a horse in any outfit is pretty funny and I would love to see someone trick or treating with a dressed up horse.

Hi Madeline thanks for dropping by and enjoying the fun! Trick or treating with a horse might be a little chaotic alright, but at least the horse pumpkins would be a nice touch. Have you seen the article on art with horseshoes for other amazing ideas for other festive seasons and day to day objects Horse Shoe Art.

These costumes are absolutely amazing and so fun! I will have to keep these ideas in mind for next Halloween. Of course, my horse may not appreciate some of these. But I could certainly paint his hooves to look like jack-o-lanterns. Very simple but unique. Thanks for the great idea.

Hi Linda I know what you mean my horse wouldn’t be impressed by many either!! But the hooves is a simple and effective one, you’ll have to send me on a photo!

Oh my gosh! It never occurred to me to dress up a horse for Halloween. But, why not? I love these Halloween costume ideas for horses. I love them all, but I really love the Harry Potter. And the horses don’t seem to mind being dressed up.

The pumpkin horse art is amazing. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Wendy I think the horses don’t see it as any more daft than putting on a horse rug or a saddle they really are very patient creatures, it’s lovely to see. I agree about the pumpkin art there are definitely some talented people did you see the horseshoe art? Horse Shoe Art

That Lord of The Ring costume looks pretty creepy, especially because I just finished watching the series and it was a trip all that he went through. Haha I think that if I saw that on Halloween night I might have to go back inside. I’m not a big scary or horror genre type of guy. I like more comedy and action based costumes like Family Guy or Iron man.

Ha ha I’d say any of those appearing at your door would be scary alright, I think if it was a foggy night and you were walking past a graveyard that would just complete the scene.

I must admit. I never even dreamed of dressing up a horse for Halloween so I must not have much of an imagination. lol

I killed myself laughing when I saw the photo of the horse dressed like a sheriff, but the Harry Potter horse had me rolling on the floor. Where did they even get the huge glasses?

This is great! Thanks so much for a fun article.

Hi Halloween is a fun time and I suppose other festival times also, but there is definitely something about this particular festivity that brings out the madness in the horsey community!

Probably the best halloween costume i have ever seen was from an article from Horses Mad (http://www.horsesmad.com/15-awesome-easy-horse-halloween-costumes/) where the person leading the horse dressed as a bottle of fly spray, and the little kid on the horse dressed as a giant fly. Just Brilliant!
